All roads lead to Brčko! Well, some of them do…
We recommend getting here from either Ljubljana or Belgrade. It is possible from Sarajevo and Zagreb, but can be more complicated and take longer.
IMPORTANT: When crossing the border into Bosnia you MUST get your passport stamped. Occassionally the Border Guards will forget to do this, please give them this Message for Border Guards, which asks them to stamp your passport (give it to them along with your passport at the border). We need this to register you with the local police, and if you don’t have a stamp we will need to arrange for you to leave Bosnia and return with one!
From Ljubljana:
If you arrive into Ljubljana airport take a bus into the centre of town (ask for “Centar Grad”). Once there you can get a bus from the main bus station (LJUBLJANA AVTOBUSNA POSTAJA) direct to Brčko everyday at 13:30, arriving into Brčko at 20:00.
Please see the Ljubljana Bus Station website to check your travel details.
(There is a later bus but we can not meet you from this one in Brčko, so please do not take this unless you have organised alternative accommodation in Brčko for your first night.)
If you want to spend a night or 2 in Ljubljana we recommend the Celica Hostel a unique Hostel/Art Gallery housed in a former prison. Book in advance to be sure of getting a room!
From Belgrade:
On arrival to Belgrade airport we recommend you speak to the Tourism Information desk. There is one located on the first floor, and occasionally also in the Baggage Reclaim area. They can advise you on the bus to the Belgrade Bus + Train Station. There are a number of options, you can either take a local city bus, which takes longer but costs less (around 100 Dinars), or a mini-bus, which costs around 250 Dinars. We do not recommend taking a taxi, however, if you must, then try not to pay more than 1500 Dinars.
Once you reach the Bus and Train station go to the ticket desk inside the station and ask for a ticket to “Brčko, u Bosna”. This should cost around 1250 Dinars, and buses leave quite regularly. The bus may have the name written in Cyrrillic, if so look for Брчко. Please try and arrive in Brčko before 8pm, as otherwise we will not be able to meet you at the bus station.
One of our volunteers has written a great account of reaching Brčko via Belgrade, we recommend reading it – http://fireflybosnia.org/2011/05/30/majas-diary/
If you want to spend a night or 2 in Belgrade we recommend staying at the ArkaBarka Hostel, a unique experience of floating on the Danube while you sleep! Book in advance to be sure of getting a room!
